Met Gala Countdown! Theme: Rei Kawakubo- Comme des Garçons

The Met Gala is finally here and we're super excited! The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York. Each year's event celebrates the theme of that year's Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, as guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit. This year's theme will be honouring Japanese Avant-Garde fashion designer, Rei Kawakubo.

Rei Kawakubo founded the avant garde label Comme des Garçons (French for "like some boys") in 1969, and was part of a cohort of radical Japanese designers to debut in Paris in the early 1980s.

Throughout her career, Kawakubo has striven to create new aesthetics, defying norms about what clothing and the body should look like. The reclusive 74-year old is known for pushing boundaries, blurring the lines between art and fashion. With her Comme des Garcons label, she has over the past decades built a global fashion empire.

The exhibition of her work is the Met's first exhibition of a living fashion designer for more than 30 years.
